On Becoming for Junior Doctors

Our On Becoming programme for physician associates is one of a range of programmes and learning experiences in the On Becoming suite. We also ran a version for F1 and F2 junior doctors, called On Becoming a Leader. Designed over four months, the programme comprised an orientation, three modules, work in Praxis Groups on a self-directed learning agenda, peer coaching and the group’s hosting of an influential Close Event.

Programme Testimonials

Jonathan Cattrall – Junior Doctor

Since enrolling with the on becoming programme I have felt a genuine attitude change towards leadership. Some of the course focused on techniques to develop my management and leadership skills and I significantly benefitted from these aspects, however my most valuable outcomes have been the self-confidence and drive that have been nurtured during the course.

I really feel better equipped to perform in a leadership role, now and in the future. I am so grateful for the opportunity, and I'm sure many of my colleagues that completed the course think the same.

Sabine Jamal – Junior Doctor

On Becoming is not your typical ‘leadership course’ that we all get emailed about on a regular basis. These are more often than not, evening courses involving lectures or inspirational stories from current leaders with the focus being on the speaker’s journey. On Becoming is an intensive 4-month course with face-to-face days as well as private study and group work that immersed and engaged each member of our cohort. We were taught not just about the general qualities of a leader and the principles of leadership but how each of us individually could develop into leaders ourselves. This was not limited to esoteric principles but involved us practicing everything we were taught and bringing it into our day-to-day work (and for many of the cohort, personal) experiences with tangible results. The small size of the cohort enabled development of strong bonds and trust so that each member was fully engaged and shared personal concerns and positive experiences allowing us all to learn from both the facilitators and each other. I would strongly encourage anyone that had the opportunity to attend On Becoming to do so.
